Aug 29-Nov 14, 2024

This class is typically for students in 9th through 12th grade, often ages 14-17.

This class will teach through the TWJ Basic Writing Handbook, helping students firmly understand the 4-step process taught in all classes. After learning the writing process, students will learn the different elements needed for specific types of essays. These include persuasive, argumentative, expository, descriptive, compare and contrast, discursive, reflective or a personal narrative. They will also learn methods and strategies that will allow them to complete each specific style, and they will write a selection of paragraphs and essays to practice the various forms. As this is an advanced level for high school students, students will have weekly homework to submit for feedback. This course will not study a novel, but will include articles and informational text for content. This class will help any students specifically working toward a-g requirements for high school students, as well as any students that simply desire a better understanding of high school essay writing.

Instructor

Julie Snyder

Educational Director/Instructor/Tutor

Julie has had the privilege of homeschooling her daughter for the first eight years of her formal education. With extensive medical issues, her daughter required many surgeries and endured sometimes days, weeks, or months of recovery time. As her nurse, Julie had to learn to balance physical needs with social experiences and educational habits that would help her grow into a brilliant student with a bright future. Julie loves a good challenge. She also loves to watch a student grasp a concept, develop skills and succeed! She believes that with effort and time, each person can learn to communicate more effectively. Writing is a huge portion of communicating, but it doesn't need to be overwhelming. With the tools we have to offer, Julie feels certain that each student will grow and blossom, becoming confident in the skills needed to be a good writer. She has extensive experience working with students of all ages, from preschool age through college level. She is passionate about teaching with kindness and joy. Learning is wonderful and Julie hopes to pass that love on to others.

Julie has transitioned into the training role for the teachers, and is the Adult Training Instructor. While she still maintains a handful of long-term tutoring students over the past 6 years, she continues to develop new resources and avenues to help our parents and community partners bring rich writing instruction to the families we serve.
